20 Years of “Firsts”

  • 2003: Installed the first production-model bird radars at military airfields for real-time aircraft bird strike risk alerts to air traffic controllers and pilots.

  • 2004: Commissioned the first offshore bird radar for automated pre-construction wind farm surveys.

  • 2008: Deployed the first radar-activated migratory bird migration system at two wind farms on the Texas coast.

  • 2009: Introduced the world’s first purpose-built solid-state bird detection radar.

  • 2010: Deployed the first radar-activated system for raptor and bat mortality risk at wind farms.

  • 2012: Commissioned the first radar-activated wind farm obstruction lighting management system (Aircraft Detection Lighting System) in the United States.

  • 2016: Launched the DroneWatcher Drone Surveillance Radar (DSR) and DroneWatcher RF multi-layer drone defense system.

  • 2018: Introduced the world’s first True3D bird radar sensor.

Facilities

The company’s facilities consist of 20,000 square feet of office, laboratory, and production space in Florida, supporting the design, development, assembly, testing, and support of advanced radar systems. Research resources include systems, components, and test sites for software development, testing, and calibration.

DeTect radar systems are manufactured in accordance with industrial and military (MILSPEC), European Union (CE Mark), and other international standards. Whenever possible, they incorporate Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components to provide customers with high performance, competitive acquisition costs, low operating and maintenance costs, and ongoing opportunities for technology upgrades and modernization throughout the system lifecycle.

Since 2003, DeTect radar systems have been used in facilities and projects worldwide, demonstrating exceptional performance, reliability, operational capability, and more than ten million hours of successful operation.

The U.S. Department of Defense has acquired twenty MERLIN systems to date, based on a documented record of enhanced aircrew safety, reduced aircraft-bird strike damage, and increased mission readiness.

Following extensive evaluation and field testing of various bird radar technologies, NASA selected DeTect’s MERLIN system in 2006 to support the safe launch of the $2 billion Space Shuttle program, achieving 100% system uptime for 22 launches through the program’s completion in 2011.
